In 2006, the legend returns as the AE1 Classic, and at an inflation busting 845 per a pair.

The AE1 Classic.The AE1 Classic.

Costing £700 per pair in 1988, Acoustic Energy’s AE1 became the must have audiophile loudspeaker of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. As famous and respected at home as in the recording studio, the AE1 re-wrote the rule book on mini-monitors and became a legend. In 2006, the legend returns as the AE1 Classic, and at an inflation busting £845 per a pair.

With well known fans of the AE1 including Abbey Road Studios, Air Studios, Mick Hucknall, Seal and Roger Waters, the AE1’s passing in the late 1990’s was mourned by many – so Acoustic Energy decided to bring it back. Time may move on, but the principles of accuracy, transparency and listening ease – features that made the original AE1 so successful – have not. The new AE1 Classic is as faithful to the original model as possible, the only minor differences being those born of improved manufacturing techniques.

At the cutting edge of innovation in the 1980’s, the famous ceramic sandwich aluminium mid/bass driver is still made at AE’s Cirencester factory. The driver was the first of its kind to use the cone as a heat sink, which markedly improves power handling over traditional doped-paper designs. The cone is hard anodised to create an extremely rigid structure with class-leading power handling for its size and minimal compression.

In addition to being pioneers of metal cone technology, AE was among the first to use a cabinet lined with a latex fibre/powder composite. The same 25mm magnesium dome unit is installed in the latest AE1 Classic and each cabinet is hand-lined with the same acoustically dead compound at the UK factory. The result is one of the few loudspeakers in history that remains truly pistonic across the entire audio band and delivers the same reference levels of clarity, definition and naturalness today as it did 20 years ago.

The original AE1 was the first truly accurate, high-power compact near-field monitor and set the standard to which all, subsequent ‘bookshelf’ loudspeakers have aspired. The AE1 Classic today is no less of a revelation in audio purity and listening pleasure and, now at far less than the original price in real terms, an audiophile bargain for 2006.

AE’s AE1 Classic will be available from March 2006 at £845 per pair.
